Apple: The iPhone Cometh

September 10th, 2005 Comment Go to comments

The Internet is agog with speculation about Apple’s “iPhone”. (Everyone seems to think it will be called an “iPhone”, but Apple hasn’t announced that.) The announcement will occur on September 7th, probably amid a storm of publicity. Steve Jobs wanted to keep product details secret before the launch but it looks like he failed. Purported details of the phone are provided in a manual that has been published on the FCC web site.

If so, then the “iPhone” will be both a music player and a camera (VGA-quality) and will have a removable flash card for storing music or photos. It will operate on GSM cellular networks and it will also support Bluetooth.

To further disturb Apple’s desire for secrecy, what claim to be pictures of the device have been floating around for a few months. Here is an example if you’re interested. It is probably a picture of a prototype.

The timing of the product launch makes sense. It should have sales momentum by the time the Christmas holidays arrive. The market for such a phone is clearly much larger than the iPod market – it has been estimated as three times the size at least. How big a piece of this Apple can get is anyone’s guess.
