Who Does What With Mobile Phones?

I came across a presentation by Intel which was pushing the benefits of the Moorestown Platform – Intel’s attempt to take a piece of the Mobile Phone chip market. The chip seems to have some compelling features. But never mind. That’s not the point.

The point is that Intel produced the graphic below, which derives from research by Parks Associates. Intel was inferring that mobile users don’t do the activities illustrated because the chips can’t hack it.

Methinks they do protest irrelevantly. For example, just ask RIM how many Blackberry users don’t use email. Ask Apple how many iPhone users don’t use the Internet (including the YouTube feature). Clearly it’s all about device design, screen size, user interface – and not the chip.

I did notice though, that Intel is projecting a 10x power reduction for idle running by 2009/2010 with Moorestown. Power consumption – now, that is a chip thing.
