Oh please. Autodiscovery is an incidental and mildly amusing adjunct to CMDB, not a core technology. Exactly who populates "a database of reference information"? And more importantly, who manually links all the discovered entities to conceptual entities such as service, process or business owner?

Will you allow an automatic process to change CMDB reference data? NO. All changes to CMDB should be captured by Change Management and therefore will be performed manually. Auto-discovery is purely an audit tool to check.

And it doesn't even begin to address the key issues you quite rightly point out: Who will take responsibility for integrating all the disparate data sources? Who will rationalize conflicting metadata? (Indeed how will the metadata problem be handled?) Who will enter the data and keep it current?

CMDB cannot be auto-discovered http://www.itskeptic.org/node/37
